  18. I wrote a note to Neil about the problems trying to roto in Lightwave.
  19. The project that I tried this on was a commercial that the director 
  20. wanted to add of all things a Flare??!  The only SGI package that 
  21. produces good lens rings is Alias and Lightwave.  I did have Alias but
  22. the version that I had did not have this feature, thus I trucked in
  23. my Amiga for the element.

  25. The project was simple, generate a flare so that the timings matched
  26. the movement of the earth as it eclipsed the sun.  I decided to generate
  27. a simple roto frame of a DOT in softimage that I could load into the 
  28. background display of lightwave.  The process did work, but on an A3000
  29. the display is a terrible 1bit image.  I did know this - so the roto
  30. frames that I created were B&W with the background white and the dot
  31. black.  This combination seemed to be most visiable during animation. 
  32. Once the animation was finished, I exported it back to the SGI to find
  33. that the roto timing was fine - but the image was offset?  This could be
  34. due to many different factors.  The most likely being the aspect of the
  35. layout display is different from the orignial image???  I never investigate
  36. the problem further - I simply fixed the problem in FLAME.

  38. Roto in lightwave is not one of the best features in the current version
  39. of the package.  The method works ok for roto motion that does not need
  40. to match other sources.  If you are looking to match live action scenes I 
  41. think it is a big leap - at least until the PC & SGI version are ready!
